American Dream #2

  • I'm thinking the American Dream is...
*Equality and freedom for everyone.
*A nation where people have the opportunity to progress.
*Most people think of it as I do, but some have lost hope because, they see it non-realistic, just a as "dream".
*People want to look or act in a certain way so they won't be judged or so they can "fit" in.
*American dream is just a vision not a reality.
  • This idea comes from...
*"The Invisible man"- "Fathers seemed to be uniformly taller than six feet. Most of them were wearing blue blazers, white shirts, and incredibly out-of-style silk ties...ladies wore their hair blonde, straight and off the face."
~It seems like everyone was expected to look in a similar to "fit in", so they would be equal to everyone else in the club.

*"The Invisible man"- "...but it seemed so odd to see a black man win golf club here on this course."
~This tells me that there was inequality and racism in the club, people wanted to pursue the American Dream by making equal rights for everyone but there was still some people who treated others differently.

*"Great Gatsby"- " He was now decently clothed in a sport-shirt open at neck, sneakers and duck trousers of a nebulous hue."
~The man is trying to impress Daisy by showing off what he owns, but I feel like to impress her he's being someone who originally he's not. Maybe he feels that if he acts like himself Daisy would not give him a chance, it's like he doesn't feel free to be who he really is.

*Kenny"- "He had remarried, didn't know what other kind of work to do, still felt loyal to the company"
~In this text Kenny kept getting injured many times and he still work there because he felt loyal to the company, but I think that maybe he kept coming back because he felt that the Company was the only place that could offer him the opportunity to work since he didn't have enough studies, but maybe if he would of searched he could of found a better job.
  • For myself...
I think this idea that I have of the American Dream is too limiting, certain people think of the American Dream probably the same way I do, but since it's not happening right now, because I still believe there's certain inequality in America, maybe we could view the American Dream in a different way not just as creating the "perfect" nation (America). It's realistic, and with effort it can be accomplished but either certain people or things are the barrier that are making it not happen. I believe it's just a vision not a reality.
  • Something I'm wondering from others is...
*What do they think about the American Dream?
*What does the "American Dream" means for them and describe it?
*Can the "dream" be accomplished or do you think is non-realistic?

American Dream #1

Something I'm thinking about the American Dream is...
Is the-American-Dream-dead?
What is DACA?

The way I think of the American Dream is as freedom, equality (regardless of race, social class,or ethnic background), the idea that ¨if you work hard, you'll go ahead¨, is America the place of opportunities. But I feel like that's just how me and some other people think of it as, it's not really what is happening here in America. For example; everyone who earns it, does has freedom, but there's not a lot of equality. Before it was towards the Native Americans and African Americans, now is immigrants and gays, there's not the same opportunities for those two groups. DACA is a two-year permit that allows 16-29 years-old people who were brought to the country illegally in their childhood, to go to college and work. That is one opportunity, but not everyone qualifies, the rest just can't go to college or work because they can't. Also for gays, not all states approve gay marriage, they're not having the same equality as everyone else, who is allowed to marry who ever they want. I think the American Dream is just what everyone is expecting or want to happen, but is not happening.
